Description
Designed by Sarah Carr for a Labyrinth festival at Lincoln Cathedral in 2014.
This complex piece of knitting was created in one piece following the path of a traditional labyrinth.
Inspired by Catherine Swynford, the historic character who played a pivotal role at the English Court in the 14th Century. She is buried in the Cathedral and was hugely controversial in her lifetime.
The yarns were chosen to tell part of the story. Blue faced Leicester and Lincoln Longwool yarns were spun for me by Griffin mill. Leicester and Lincoln being significant to Catherine’s life. I took the yarn over to Norfolk to hand dye it with Woad. Woad-inc in Norfolk is the only commercial grower of woad in the UK. Using this method to create the yarn felt suitably labourious and authentic to the way courtly dress was produced historically
